"I See the Wise Woman. She carries a blanket of compassion.
She wears a robe of wisdom. Around her throat flutters a veil of shifting shapes. From her shoulders, a mantle of power flows. A story band encircles her forehead. She stitches a quilt; she spins fibbers into yarn; she knits; she sews; she weaves. She ties the threads of our lives together. She forms a web of spiraling threads. I see the wise woman. She is at her loom: a loom warped with days and nights. White threads, black threads receive her flying shuttle, a shuttle filled with threads of many colours of the people of the earth. Some threads short; some threads long; each thread different, each perfect. These threads are alive with sound and colour. These threads are mutable; they change at a touch. These threads are crystal antennae; they respond at a thought. And intertwined with each thread is a thread blood red: a thread of such sensitivity, it cannot be seen, yet a thread of such vitality, it can never be hidden. As our blood flows over and under the days and nights of our lives and binds each moment to the whole, so the thread of the wise woman binds us in the tapestried, cosmic web. ManifestoSoul Threads is wearable art.
"My mission is to explore, create and inspire the threads of one's soul to be woven into cloth that is seen in the outer world." Doreen Breen, owner and designer for Soul Threads, works with natural and up-cycled fabrics to create wearable art pieces. She is a strong advocate for “slow fashion”, buying local, supporting hand-made and bringing awareness to the human injustice and environmental issues related to the fashion industry and the manufacture of clothing. Doreen has always believed that there is a conscious connection between people and the clothing they are attracted to and perhaps even wear. She creates clothing and accessories that empower, inspire, and create confidence in the wearer. The results have been 100% natural clothing and accessories that have been up-cycled and redesigned using techniques such as hand-dying, felting, embellishments, hand-knitting and a variety of other fiber textile crafts. She also works directly with clients to bring their soul forward through the collaborative design process in her private line of Soul Coats. For many years she has been involved in programs related to nonviolence and women’s empowerment and worked in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault awareness and prevention. Over time, these causes have migrated more into her creative work, resulting in her latest Warrior Women project. This project is focused on bringing forth the stories of warrior women throughout history while allowing Doreen to use her abilities to showcase wearable art representative of the particular women and their cultures. |
